LGTripp Gallery is pleased to announce two solo exhibitions of recent works by Donna Usher and Alex Queral. Usher’s multi-layered, kaleidoscopic circles and Queral’s ad infinitum black to white hard-edged lines team up for these artists’ second solo exhibitions presented by director Luella Tripp.

The Meditations series is inspired by Donna Usher’s travels in Australia to study Aboriginal dot painting. She is also inspired by the myriad of circular images observed in nature such as orbs, cells, eggs sacs, the moon’s eclipse, black holes and galaxies in space. The process is intuitive. As it evolves, the work evokes a response. Layers of brilliant colors interact with the transparency of encaustic and the richness of gold leaf. The artist’s compulsive repetition of circular hand motions, create dense, lustrous compositions of endless circles, some veiled and others intense as planets in a distant orbit. Ms. Usher states, “The interaction of vibrant color within the paintings is used to evoke visual sensations of the sublime for the viewer to meditate on and renew the spirit.”

Over the course of a decade, Alex Queral has concentrated on geometric, linear forms and color as a basic language of expression. The hard-edged approach in his work is influenced by the graphic look of comic books he read as a child. His intuitive approach evolves into dialogue, the work ordering the next step. The artist creates structure, depth and light by meticulously painting recurring lines to shape complex constructions. Shades of gray span from black to white, creating a matrix of light emanating from darkness. “The work hints at or alludes to a primordial, pre-elemental, pre-geometric ‘world’ where light particles are bouncing about and colliding at high speed. As they do so, they leave a line in their wake that will eventually, in some future time, coalesce with others to create…other rectilinear shapes,” explains Queral.
